Book Reviews--Sookie, BDB and The Help

I just like this and thought it was sweet.
These have been a while in coming. I was reminded when a blog I follow was asking for book reviews to win 200 books. Too bad it was only open to Australian readers.

Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris: After having love, love, loved the first books in the Sookie Stackhouse series, I was sorely and unequivocally disappointed in DEAD RECKONING. Ms. Harris's characters just didn't engage me in their plight. At times, Sookie annoyed me, and Eric was no hero. Also, only one naughty romp is never enough! To boot, a quickie was even more disappointing. Where's the romance in that?!? I guess I was most disappointed because Gayla and I were supposed to read this book together. Maybe I'll give it another read before the next one comes out and see if my mood improves. 2.5 stars

Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward: Maybe because I was supposed to read this one with Gayla as well. Or maybe because they try to kill a racehorse in the first chapter, I just felt so deflated after reading the latest installment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. This was number 10 or 11, heck I've lost count, and I think I figured out the formula about five books ago. Payne was a strong leading lady, which was totally right up my ally. However, Dr. Manny needed to man up. John's book was still the best in the series. 3 stars

The Help by Kathryn Stockett: I seriously read this book in 48 hours! I could not put it down. Ms. Stockett kept me engaged and invested in her characters. I kept seeing every girl bully mean chick I have ever witnessed in Hilly and just wanted to claw her eyes out. I thought the cinema representation was a plus instead of a draw back as is usually the case with books made into movies. I do have to say I preferred Skeeter's mother's response to the book and Hilly in the movie more so than her response in the book. While reading, I kept saying, "STICK UP FOR YOUR CHILD! BE THE ALL KNOWING, ALL SEEING SOUTHERN MAMA!" 5 stars

  2. I was the same way about The Help. I wanted to see those girl bullies get it in the end. It was awesome!
